Crochet Crab Stitch

The crab stitch is slightly different from other crochet stitches but creates a great texture and finished edge. The crab stitch resembles the reverse single crochet stitch (aka crabs), where you work in opposite directions, creating your little waves. How Do You Crochet A Crab:

This crab was made using only basic stitches for the head and body. The only challenging part is that there are six legs and claws, which are small, but if you have patience and time, this will work out just fine. From there, you're just adding single crochet stitches (or chains) around the tail of that initial loop. So your yarn will go over the hook and back down through the stitch again and again until you finish this round. The pattern is made from the tip of the shell down to the middle section. The crab has a scalloped edge that works up wonderfully into a shell that opens like an actual crab.

Crochet Crab Stitch Edging:

Crochet Crab Stitch Edging

Using the crab stitch technique, you can crochet an edge as an alternative to using a crochet pattern for your next project. Crab stitch makes a very sharp edge and works slightly thinner than a rolled single crochet edging of the same height. The resulting look is similar to twisted cord or cording, but it's even easier to make because you can use any yarn with a matching crochet hook. This means you work over the back loops of your previous crochet stitches to create a patterned edge or edging that looks similar to a reverse stockinette stitch.

  • Beginner-level crocheters can stitch this edging with their preferred yarn and hook easily.

How Do You Finish A Crab Stitch Border:

The crab stitch is a thick, textured stitch that can be used for many projects. It's an easy border to work on, and the finished product is quite dramatic. The single reverse crochet is the same single crochet from left to right, just working in the opposite direction. Following this video tutorial with detailed instructions will soon become familiar with how to crochet the crab stitch border.
