Step-By-Step Instructions
1. Begin with the Magic Ring and First Row
- Start with a magic ring:
- Wrap the yarn around your two fingers to form a loop.
- Insert the hook into the loop, pull the yarn through, and chain once to secure the ring.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first dc), and make 6 total dc into the magic ring.
- Create the middle point:
- Chain 2, make another 6 dc into the same ring.
- Pull the yarn tail to tighten the ring, and sl st to the top of the ch-3 to close the round.
2. Set up for Increases
- From here, increases will occur at:
- The first st of one side.
- The center ch-2 SP (on both sides of the ch-2).
- The final st of one side.
3. Rounds for Triangle Grow (Increase Rounds)
Round 1: Increasing
- Begin with ch 3 (counts as a dc). Turn your work.
- At the same starting stitch, make 1 dc (this is an increase).
- Work dc in each dc across the row until the middle ch-2 SP.
- In the ch-2 SP, make 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
- Continue making dc in each dc across until you reach the last stitch.
- In the last st, make 2 dc (increase at the end of the row). Total stitch count per side should now increase by 3.
Round 2 and Onward: Continue Growing
- Repeat steps from Round 1: Make increases in the first st, middle ch-2 SP, and the last st.
- Continue until the triangle grows to fit your desired cup size. Suggested height: 18–20 cm, but adjust to fit.
4. Starting Bust Coverage (Decreasing Rows)
Once the triangle cups have grown to your desired size, you’ll stop further increases and begin covering the bust by working shortened rows and decreases.
Decreasing Rows Steps:
- Start with ch 3 and turn your work.
- Perform a dec (2 dc together) over the first two stitches.
- Dc across until you are 2 stitches before the center ch-2 SP.
- Perform a dec in those 2 sts before the middle ch-2 SP.
- Make 1 dc into the ch-2 SP. Do not add increases here.
- On the other side of the center, do a decrease immediately after the ch-2 SP (in the first 2 sts).
- Dc across until the last 2 sts, and perform a final decrease.
Repeat the above steps until you have about 5 cm of bust coverage.
5. Work on the Opposite Triangle
Repeat the steps for coverage outlined above on the second side of the triangle to make it symmetrical.
6. Edge Work Around the Halter Top
Add a decorative edge around the bottom and sides of the top.
Steps:
- Attach yarn to the bottom of one triangle (at the row before the decreases).
- Work sc evenly along the bottom edge, ensuring the stitches are evenly spaced. For any large SPs, make 2 sc.
- At the center (ch-2 SP), add 2 sc and continue the bottom edging.
- Finish at the opposite edge.
7. Decorative Straps and Neckline
For the Neckline Straps:
- Attach yarn at the top corner of one triangle.
- Chain enough stitches to reach around the back of your neck comfortably (e.g., ~200 ch).
- Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st into each ch to form a sturdy cord.
- Reattach yarn to the top corner of the opposite triangle and repeat for the second neck strap.
For the Back Laces:
- Work a similar chain method at the lower side points of the halter top.
- Crisscross the laces at the back by weaving them through the spaces along the edge.
8. Adding Decorative Stitches (Optional)
For added flair, you can add chain-loop edging to the bottom:
- After completing the bottom edge in sc, chain 6.
- Skip 3 sts and sc into the 4th.
- Continue around the bottom edge.
- On the next row, work 4 sc, ch 2, 4 sc into each chain-loop.
9. Finishing Touches
- Weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle.
- Block the top by lightly spraying it with water and shaping it to lay flat. Allow it to dry.
