Materials & Tools Needed

  • Yarn:
    • Collar Base: Medium-weight yarn (Worsted) in green or a shade of choice.
    • Flowers: Multiple colors (5-7 recommended for variety). You can use DK-weight yarn for smaller flowers or worsted for uniform size.
  • Crochet Hook:
    • Collar Base: 4mm hook.
    • Flowers: 3.75mm hook (for slightly smaller flowers).
  • Scissors: For cutting yarn ends.
  • Needle: For weaving in ends and attaching flowers. Ensure it can pass through your yarn easily.
  • Stitch Marker: To mark your chain counts or track stitches.
  • Optional: Cat-safe yarn (e.g., avoid materials risky for chewing).

Finished Size & Customization Ideas

  • Approximate Size:
    • The main collar length is measured based on your cat's neck size minus some elasticity/stretch from the stitches. For example:
      • A ~12.5" (31.75 cm) neck size used a foundation chain of 11 inches (~60 chains + 1).
  • Customization Ideas:
    • For Adjusting Size:
      • Increase/decrease the foundation chain in multiples of 6, then add 1 (e.g., 6x9+1 for 55 stitches).
      • Modify the necktie length (typically 2x the collar’s length, e.g., ~120 chains).
    • Flower Size:
      • Use DK-weight yarn for smaller flowers or Worsted-weight yarn for slightly larger ones.
      • Adjust the hook size for looser or tighter stitches.
    • Color Options:
      • Experiment with contrasting flower colors and collar greens.
      • Use monochrome or gradient tones for a cohesive style.
    • Yarn Texture:
      • Use lightweight cotton yarn for summer collars or fluffier material for cooler seasons.

Pattern Abbreviations & Terminology

  • Ch: Chain
  • Sl st: Slip Stitch
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Tr (Treble Crochet): Yarn over twice, insert into stitch, and pull through loops in sets of two.
  • St: Stitch

  • Fo: Fasten off

Step-by-Step Crochet Instructions

Part 1: Collar Base

  1. Measure Pet Neck: Measure your cat's neck loosely.
    • Start the foundation chain slightly smaller than the neck size due to crochet stretch.
  2. Foundation Chain:
    • Create a chain in multiples of 6 + 1. For example:
      • For an 11-inch collar: Chain 55 (6x9 + 1).
  3. Row 1: Treble Crochet:
    • Add 4 extra chains (for the turning chain).
    • Into the last chain of the foundation (marked), work 1 tr.
    • Continue working tr stitches in each chain across.
    • Total: Number of foundation chains + 1 (e.g., 56 for 55 chains).
  4. Row 2 & 3: Double Crochet:
    • Chain 2 (turning chain, doesn’t count as a stitch).
    • Work 1 dc into each stitch from the previous row.
    • Repeat for one more row.
    • Total: 3 rows complete (1 row treble crochet, followed by 2 rows of double crochet).
  5. Row 4: Scalloped Edge:
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Into the first stitch, place 1 sc.
    • Skip 2 stitches, then work 6 tr into the same stitch (shell/scallop).
    • Skip 2 stitches, then work 1 sc into the next stitch to secure the shell.
    • Repeat the scalloped pattern:
      • [Skip 2, 6 tr into next st (shell), skip 2, sc into next st].
    • End the row with one final 1 sc into the very last stitch.
    • Finish Off (Fo) and weave in ends.

Part 2: Flowers

  1. Starting the Flower:
    • Use Magic Circle (or Ch 4 & sl st into first ch to form a ring).
    • Round 1:
      • Ch 3 (counts as 1 hdc + ch 1).
      • Work [1 hdc, ch 1] into the circle 5 times.
      • Close the round with a sl st into the 2nd ch of the starting ch-3.
      • Pull the magic circle tight to close.
  2. Round 2: Petals:
    • Chain 2.
    • Into the chain space of the round below:
      • Work 6 extended long double crochets together (yarn over, draw a long loop x 6, yarn over, pull through all loops), followed by sl st into the space.
    • Repeat in each chain space around the flower to create 5 petals.
    • After the last petal, ch 1, sl st to close, and Fo leaving a long tail.
    • Push the back of the flower forward for a puff/3D appearance.
  3. Make Additional Flowers:
    • Vary the colors and make as many flowers as you like.
  4. Attach Flowers to Collar:
    • Use the flower tails to sew onto the scalloped edge of the collar.
    • Start with the center flower, then attach the end flowers, and fill in gaps.
    • Secure tails with knots on the back side and weave for extra hold.

Part 3: Neck Tie

  1. Chain:
    • Chain about 2x the collar length (e.g., 120 chains) to allow enough length for adjusting/ties.
    • Fo and pull tight.
  2. Weave Through:
    • Thread the chain through the treble crochet stitches of Row 1 (base collar row). Alternately weave:
      • Over 2 stitches, under 2 stitches across the collar.
    • Ensure the chain ends evenly and adjusts easily.

Finishing and Final Notes

  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • Ensure there are no loose threads/knots that could be chewed or pulled by your pet.
  • Test the fit on your cat. Ensure it’s snug but not tight.
